Simon being interviewed for BBC Ros Atkins

Word Forest in BBC Feature on Deforestation

Our co-founder, Simon West is featured in a very enlightening piece on deforestation by Ros Atkins on the BBC this week.

Simon did a handful of television interviews in the Media Zone a few days ago and we were all delighted to see a snippet from one ending up in Ros’s informative short film.

Ros presents the startling facts in this package in a digestible fashion but they’re quite shocking when you break them all down.

The only downside to the film was it didn’t go into detail about what we feel is the missing piece that can really make reforestation projects work successfully: critical humanitarian support for the amazing people in Kenya (or anywhere in the tropics) who plant and take care of the trees.

Ros Atkins on...Tree Planting and Climate Change

The tree planting communities we work with across Kenya are the most important people in the world right now. They hold the secret to making mitigation of our existential crisis happen effectively, but they need to be paid, they need to be supported in a variety of ways and critically, they need educational programmes to understand what’s going on environmentally and meteorologically.

This is what we do at The Word Forest Organisation and I’m hoping we’ll have further opportunities to explain what we feel is the silver bullet to making a global difference to climate chaos, particularly for the people living on the frontline of it.
